Tom lives in Westport, Connecticut and swims

August 3, 2001 - Over the years my job has taken me to many places around the world.  When ever possible, I try to locate a local pool, other than the hotel's, in which to swim a few yards.  In the next few months I'm going to try to locate websites of these pools or at least a way to get information about them.  As you scan through the pictures and descriptions, click on them for links to more information.

I hope you'll enjoy the journey as much as I am.

For those of you interested, I work at Thomson Grass Valley

Throughout the year and throughout the website are various pieces of music.  If you wish to listen or download any of them scroll to the bottom of this page or click here.

Favorite local band, Gandalf Murphy and the Slambovian Circus of Dreams.  Go to the MP3s, click on Alice and enjoy!

Here's the link to the "unofficial" WestportNow website.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming - Parks and Recreation Community pool is just a few blocks away from the center of town.  25 yard pool, huge slide and a great view of the Grand Teton Mountains as you do your laps.  Click on the barn to go to their home page.  Click here, Chamber of Commerce, if you wish general information about Jackson Hole, WY.
Dallas Downtown YMCA - Just around the corner from the Dallas west end historic district, this "Y" features its' pool on the second floor and has a few pillars between lanes.  While you swim, they'll put a new shine on your boots!  Click on the skyline for more information . . .
Los Angeles Downtown YMCA - The next time you find yourself at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles you'll be delighted to know that the Stuart M. Ketchum YMCA, at 401 South Hope Street, can be reached directly from the hotel using a 6th floor walkway.  For a look at the surrounding area, click on this map link.
San Francisco's Chinatown area has a very friendly, albeit small, YMCA at 855 Sacramento Street.

San Diego
has 13 area YMCAs.  A complete list of them is available at www.ymca.org.  For all the "Y" listings you go to www.ymca.netIn 1987, when I went to my first USMS Short Course Nationals at Stanford University, I fly to San Diego, then drove up the California coast stopping along the way to do a little taper swimming.  For an interesting look at San Diego click here on San Diego 360.
Montreux-Vevey, Switzerland Are approximately 60 miles east of Geneve situated on the "Switzerland Riviera."  These adjoining towns offer many places to swim.  Vevey has several 50 meter pools with views of the Alps.  Whether you're there for business staying at the Montreux Palace Hotel or for the Jazz Festival you're never far from a great pool!

Fire and Water - During the summers of 2000 and 2001 the west had many fires throughout the national forests.  This dramatic picture was taken by John McColgan's photo of elk in the East Fork of the Bitterroot, Montana - Sula Complex on August 6, 2000.  My sister lives in Montana, so when it's time to really get away from things, visiting her is the perfect thing to do.  She lives in the northwest corner of the state, approximately seven miles from Canada.  The Bitterroot, shown in this picture, is in the southeast corner of the state.

There are several places to swim in Montana.  Bozeman State University has a great pool.  Plus there are many fitness centers around the state that appear on the Global Health and Fitness website, including the "Second Wind Sport & Fitness Center" in Kalispell.

Boston is the sister city to San Francisco with lots to see, do and learn about our American heritage.  Check out the Boston Home PageOne of the great pools in the city is at Harvard University.  There are a number of  suburban clubs and YMCA pools including the one in Newton.  Other Boston websites to check out include the Freedom Trail, or the National Historical Park.  And for classical music at Symphony Hall, click here.

In 1988 Connecticut Master Swimmers traveled to Austin to compete in the USMS SCY held at the Lee and Joe Jamail Swimming Center at the University of Texas.  Everyone stayed at the Hyatt and enjoyed the outdoor hot tub every evening after the competition!  Click on any of the three pictures and see where it takes you!
