July 21, 2001 - A beautiful Connecticut summer day and warmer water temperatures brought out Point to Point swimmers in droves as a record number of swimmers competed in the 23rd annual event at Compo Beach on Saturday. Staged by the Westport/Weston YMCA, 203 swimmers between the ages of 8 and 83 completed the one mile swimming course. The swimmers were sent off in fine fashion by Mary Taylor who sang America the Beautiful at the start of the race. Twenty one year old Water Rat swimmer and University of Florida standout Matt Yacco, was the repeat winner this year, adding his title to four others won in previous races. He narrowly defeated 16 year old Brain Carey by one second. The two sprinted out of the water together and it was either one's race until Yacco powered underneath the finish banner. A former National YMCA champion in the 1650, Matt's time was 16.28 on Saturday. The buzz around local pools this summer had centered on the outcome of this year's race with Water Rat teammates Yacco, Carey and fourteen year old Frisk Driscoll most mentioned as favorites. Driscoll finished fourth, a mere four seconds behind Yacco. Top female finisher, 18 year old Lindsay Wolf of Fairfield was third overall. Wolf is entering her sophomore year at UCLA Her time was 16:30, two seconds behind Yacco. 24 year old Jessica Knapp of Greenwich was the second fastest female while 16 year old Liz Nugent of Westport was third. Jessica's time was 16.38 while Liz posted a time of 17:55. It was a family affair for the Marden-Platow family and the Brink family as four members of each participated in the race. Twelve year old Danny Platow was the top finisher for his family, emerging from the water in 36th place with a time of 19.38. He was followed by brothers Dave, Bart and mother Maura Marden. Sixteen year Robbie Brink led his family in the race finishing 65th with a time of 21.43. He was followed by brother Peter, mother Sandy and father Peter. This years youngest swimmer was 8 year old Elizabeth Watson of Fairfield while the oldest was 83 year old Al Dupuis of Norwalk. Elizabeth finished in 198th place while Dupuis finished in 202 place. Seven men competed in the most senior category, 75 and older. Click here for more pictures.
